The Guardian Spanish Gestures Guide

These curious examples of the fine glossary of body language expressions attached to the Spanish language and culture can come in quite handy.

I have deliberately omitted part one, two and four because I think the gestures and/or their alleged meanings are not that common or universal.

I find part three and five to be good examples of the range of non verbal communication of such an expressive culture.

Hoy, los Reyes Magos visitan España para entregar regalos a los niños.

Algunos niños reciben también un poco de carbón. Esa es la tradición. El carbón, que es dulce, quiere decir que el niño o la niña es un poco travieso o traviesa.

Los Reyes viajan en camello desde el Oriente lejano. Es un viaje muy largo.

Los niños esperan este día con mucha ilusión. Es un día muy feliz.

Hoy la gente come un roscón de reyes y hay una figura de un Rey dentro del roscón. Si tienes suerte, puedes encontrar la figura y entonces, eres el Rey de la casa. También hay una corona de papel para el Rey, o la Reina.

¡Feliz Día de Reyes a todos!
