Popular song, written by the famous and loved Chilean singer Violeta Parra. There are many versions of this song. One of the better known is the one by Argentine singer, Mercedes Sosa. Joan Baez also sings it.

In Latin American Spanish varieties, there is no distinction between the formal and the informal plural of ´tú´ (you). The form is ´ustedes´. In Spain, however, there is a distinction between ´ustedes´ and ´vosotros/as´.

Aquí puedes escuchar una versión acústica
Here you can listen to an acoustic version

Y aquí, Mercedes Sosa cantando con Joan Baez:
And here, Mercedes Sosa singing with Joan Baez:

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me two stars, which when I open them,
Perfectly distinguish black from white
And in the tall sky its starry backdrop,
And within the multitudes the man that I love.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the sound of the abc
with it, the words that I think and declare,
“Mother,” “Friend,” “Brother”
and the light shining down on
The road of the soul of the one I'm loving.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the steps of my tired feet.
With them I walked cities and puddles
Beaches and deserts, mountains and plains.
And the house of yours, your street and your courtyard.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me this heart that shakes its frame,
When I see the fruit of the human brain,
When I see good so far from evil,
When I look into the depth of your light eyes…

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me laughter and it gave me tears.
With them I distinguish happiness from pain
The two elements that make up my song,
And your song of yours, which is the same song.
And everyone’s song, which is my own song.

jugando llamarán;
pero aquéllas que el vuelo refrenaban
tu hermosura y mi dicha al contemplar,
aquéllas que aprendieron nuestros nombres...
ésas... ¡no volverán!
sus flores se abrirán;
pero aquéllas, cuajadas de rocío,
cuyas gotas mirábamos temblar
y caer, como lágrimas del día...
ésas... ¡no volverán!
jugando llamarán;
pero aquéllas que el vuelo refrenaban
tu hermosura y mi dicha al contemplar,
aquéllas que aprendieron nuestros nombres...
ésas... ¡no volverán!
The dark swallows will return
to your balcony to hang their nests
and, once again, with a wing to its glass
playing, they'll call;
but those that held back their flight
when contemplating your beauty and my bliss,
those that learned our names...
those... will not return!
The dense honeysuckle will return
to your garden to climb its walls,
and, once again, in the evening, even more beautiful,
its flowers will bloom;
but those, studded with dew,
whose drops we watched tremble
and fall, like the tears of the day...
those... will not return

The dark swallows will return
to your balcony to hang their nests
and, once again, with a wing to its glass
playing, they'll call;
but those that held back their flight
when contemplating your beauty and my bliss,
those that learned our names...
those... will not return!

Debajo un botón, ton, ton                  under a button
del Sr Martín, tin, tin                         of Mr Martín
había un ratón, ton, ton                      there was a mouse
¡ay, qué chiquitín, tin, tin!                  ay! how tiny!

¡ay, qué chiquitín, tin, tin                   ay, ¡how tiny
era aquel ratón                                   was that mouse
que encontró Martín, tin, tin              that Martin found
debajo un botón, ton, ton                   under a button

Es tan juguetón, ton, ton                   he´s so playful
el Señor Martín, tin, tin                    Mr Martin,
que metió el ratón, ton, ton               that he put the mouse
en un calcetín, tin, tin                       in a sock

En un calcetín, tin, tin                       in a sock
vive aquel ratón, ton, ton                  lives that mouse
lo metió Martín, tin, tin                     Martin put it there
porque es juguetón, ton, ton             because he is playful

And a slower version (with slightly different lyrics at the end):

This was a very popular group of clowns that had a show on TV in the 80´s. A lot of the children songs that we love in Spain today were written by them.

Miliki was a clown, accordionist and singer and his programme, ´Los payasos de la tele´ was a huge success in Spain.

Susanita tiene un ratón                          Little Susan has a mouse
un ratón chiquitín                                  a teensy mouse
que come chocolate y turrón                 that eats chocolate and turron
y bolitas de anís                                    and little balls of aniseed

duerme cerca del radiador                    he sleeps near the radiator
con la almohada en los pies                  with the pillow under his feet
y sueña que es un gran campeón          and he dreams that he is a great champion
jugando al ajedrez                                 playing chess

Le gusta el futbol                                  He likes football
el cine y el teatro                                   cinema and theatre
baila tango y rock and roll                    he dances tango and rock and roll

Y si llegamos                                         and if we arrive
y nota que observamos                          and he notices we are watching
siempre nos canta esta canción              he always sings this song to us
