A1. Greetings

A1. Saludos  Greetings

You will find lots of ways to enrich your foreign language learning experience in the various sections of this blog but to start with, you might want to focus on the very first steps like knowing how to greet at different parts of the day:

Buenos días
Buenas tardes
Buenas noches

And why not add a polite ´¿cómo estás?´ (how are you?)

1. Basho´s ´Hola, amigo´ song.

A1. El tiempo / the weather

A1. El tiempo / the weather

1. La canción del tiempo

This is a very rhythmic song to learn a lot of useful weather expressions. As you may remember from other posts, el señor Jordan speaks a Latin American Spanish and therefore sometimes uses expressions that are not that common in Spain. In this particular song we have hardly any difference to worry about, just:

Bloqueador: sun cream (in Spain: crema solar)
Está bonito: it's nice (perfectly fine in Spain but more commonly: hace bueno)

And of course, don't forget the difference in pronunciation ('ce', 'ci' and 'z')

2. Quizlet set of flashcards on the weather

Quizlet flashcards El tiempo / the weather

3. La predicción del tiempo podcast

Escucha la predicción del tiempo: La Predicción del tiempo
Escribe tus notas en este mapa de Europa:

  • ¿Dónde va a hacer sol?
  • ¿Va a hacer frío? ¿Dónde?
  • ¿Va a hacer calor en algún país?
  • ¿Qué tiempo va a hacer en España?
  • ¿Y en Rusia?
Please, note that the forecast only includes some of the countries in the map.

Al terminar, puedes comparar tu mapa con el mapa de la predicción del tiempo que puedes encontrar después de la transcripción.
When you finish, you can compare your map with the weather forecast map that you can find after the transcription.

You can go about this listening activity in various ways. It might be a good idea to start just focusing on particular countries and just concentrate on trying to catch the weather descriptions (va a hacer sol, va a hacer frío etc.) one country at a time.

After you have done the activity, you can read and listen at the same time to get a feel for the intonation and to practice pronunciation.

¡Felices vacaciones!

Videoele offers short clips filmed in Spain based on a number of topics ranging from complete beginners (A1) to upper intermediate level (B2).

Each topic contains a video clip with a link to its transcript, followed by an activity guide (guía didáctica) and an interactive activities section.

Try watching the clip first without the transcript or subtitles. Remember it´s OK to just catch a few words the first time round. The more you listen to Spanish the more your ear will get tuned to it.
After trying a few times you can watch the clip with the transcript. Reading aloud while watching the clip also helps you with your intonation.

After watching the clip, scroll down to the interactive activities. They offer a good mix of listening, writing, vocabulary and grammar practice.

A1. ¿Qué hora es? What time is it?

A1. ¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?

The first thing to know when telling the time in Spanish is that we always start with the hour, not the minutes.

Because the question is literally asking about ´the hour´ (la hora) we start with either:

1. es la ...      (when there is only one hour): es la una.   (It´s 1 o´clock)

2. son las...   (any time except 1): son las dos, son las tres, son las cuatro etc...

El Señor Jordan es un profesor de español que tiene muchos videos para aprender y practicar español.

Clip 1

En este clip, el Señor Jordan explica cómo decir la hora en español (how to tell the time in Spanish) de manera sencilla.

We just read the time as shown on a digital clock, using the linker ´y´ (and)

Son las 10 y 20

Simple and straightforward.

Something to take into account:

1. El Señor Jordan habla un español latinoamericano (Remember the differences with the letter ´c´ in     front of ´e´ and ´i´, the letter ´v´ and the letters ´j/g´ in front of ´e´ and ´i´)

2. The abbreviations ´pm´ and ´am´ might be used in Latin America but they are not used in Spain,           where full expressions will be expected:

de la mañana
de la tarde
de la noche

Clip 2

On the second clip, we can see the common way to tell the time in Spain.

If you have to tell the time and you find the above (clip 1) easier, that is absolutely fine but it is important to be familiar with the ´menos´ structure (clip 2) in case you are told the time this way while visiting Spain.

Telling the time with ´menos´

Something to take into account:

1. El Señor Jordan shows you a formula for reading a digital clock:

After half past, go to the next hour and say how many minutes are left to reach it:

Son las 10 menos veinte
(it´s 10 take away 20)
(it´s 10 minus 20 minutes)
(it´s 20 to 10)

You can see, in fact, that we also do this small calculation when telling the time in English, although we start with the minutes instead of the hour: It´s 20 to 10.

2. If you read an analogue clock, the hands already point at the hour.

Son las cuatro menos 10
(it´s 4 take away 10)
(it´s 4 minus 10)
(it´s 10 minutes to 4)

Open Learn Track 11

In this clip, a woman buys some fruit at a market stall.
The seller speaks very fast and it is very hard to hear him but the woman repeats the prices each time.

Note the different ways in which she asks for things:

-Quería                        (just slightly more polite than ´quiero´)
-¿Me puede poner...?   (can you give me...? Literally: can you put me...?)
-Póngame                     (Could you give me?)

Also, check out the other structures and expressions used:

¿Cuánto cuestan los plátanos?                       How much do bananas cost?
2.95 el Kg
Tienes Fuyi, Royal Gala, Granny Smith...    You have Fuyi, Royal Gala, Granny Smith...
¿Cuánto cuestan las Golden?                         How much do the Golden ones cost?
Son iguales, el mismo precio                         They are the same, the same price
Son emormes                                                  They are huge
Está bien, no hay problema                            That´s fine, no problem
Eso es todo, nada más                                    That´s all, nothing else
¿Cuánto es?                                                    How much is it?
11 con 29, nada más                                       Just 11.29 (literally: nothing more)
Aquí tiene                                                        Here you are
Pues, muy bien                                                Very well (´pues´ here is just a filler word)

Please, note that the shop keeper´s question ´¿Más cositas?´ is very unusual. It sounds overfamiliar. You are more likely to hear the most common ´¿Algo más?´: Anything else?

8. 123 Teach me flashcards, city

The set of 123 Teach me flashcards for vocabulary related to cities, like most other decks, contains a high number of words and some odd choices (¿luz de giro?), some of which correspond to Latin American varieties.
Nevertheless, this is still a very useful tool to learn vocabulary, given the use of images and games.
Moreover, many words are presented twice (in their singular and plural forms) or simply repeated so the total number of words is slightly smaller.
Don´t get confused with the pronunciation, which is Latin American (especially with the letters ´c´ and ´z´).

Some tips to help you with this particular deck:

Words from Latin America:
36, 44, 72, 74 and 82

The word ´vecindario´ is a synonym of ´barrio´. However, the latter is more commonly used to refer to an area of a city/town as opposed to just a few houses.

31: ´El parque zoológico´ is the full term for ´zoo´. However, it is far more common to just use the abbreviation, ´el zoo´.

36: In Spain, the correct term is ´la oficina de correos´

43: ´Estacionamiento´is perfectly fine but it is useful to know that in Spain we frequently use the English word ´parking´ meaning ´car park´.

44: In Spain, the term is ´la farola´.

9. ¿Qué ciudad es?

Listen to the podcast ¿Qué ciudad es?. Can you tell which city is being described?
(Transcript and answer below)

Transcript

ANSWER:

Barcelona

10. ¿Qué, dónde, cómo? videoele

¿Qué, dónde, cómo?

Using the question words above to ask:

Notice the difference between:
Es un barco (it´s a boat)            and            El barco está en el mar (the boat is at sea)

First, we are asking what something is and answering: es un barco (a boat, any boat)
Once we know what boat we are talking about and we want to know where it is, we use ´el´ (the) instead of ´un´ (a) to locate it: El barco está en el mar.

11. Direcciones

No está lejos - videoele

Videoele clip following directions to find various sights in Zaragoza, Aragón.

Notice that the narrator is indicating what she is actually doing at the time of speaking (present tense), rather than giving directions, so most of the endings of the verbs/actions are -o (yo):
sigo, continúo, giro etc...

Remember you can print the transcript. It is a good idea to listen to the clip first without subtitles or transcript to train your ear but it is equally useful to read and listen at the same time (or pausing and repeating afterwards) once you are familiar with the text. Shadow reading can be very helpful in linking words together and following the natural intonation pattern of the language.

12. Direcciones en Barcelona

1. Zara (una tienda de ropa española)
2. Una panadería (El Forn de Sant Jaume)
