Songs with poems by a loved popular Spanish poet

1. Tus ojos me recuerdan

Vocabulario

The word ´moreno/a´ is an endearing term in Spanish and it is used to refer to the dark tone of skin and hair. It has no negative connotation; on the contrary, it is considered attractive and desirable.

Tus ojos me recuerdan                 Your eyes remind me
las noches de verano                    of the Summer nights
negras noches sin luna,                black moonless nights
orilla al mar salado,                       on the edge of the salty sea
y el chispear de estrellas               and the sparkling of stars
del cielo negro y bajo.                   from the black and low sky.
Tus ojos me recuerdan                 Your eyes remind me
las noches de verano.                   of the Summer nights.
Y tu morena cara,                          And your dark face,
los trigos requemados,                  the toasted wheat
de los maduros campos.               from the ripened fields.

Tus ojos me recuerdan                 Your eyes remind me
las noches de verano                    of the Summer nights

De tu morena gracia,                     of your dark gracefulness,
de tu soñar gitano,                         of your gypsy dreaming
de tu mirar de sombra                   of your dark gaze
quiero llenar mi vaso.                    I want to fill up my glass
Me embriagaré una noche            I will get drunk one night
de cielo negro y bajo,                    with the black and low sky,
para cantar contigo,                       to sing with you
orilla al mar salado,                       on the edge of the salty sea,
una canción que deje                    a song that may leave
cenizas en los labios...                  ashes on our lips...
De tu mirar de sombra                  of your dark gaze
De los maduros campos               of the ripened fields

Tus ojos me recuerdan                 Your eyes remind me
las noches de verano                    of the Summer nights
Tus ojos me recuerdan                  Your eyes remind me
las noches de verano                     of the Summer nights
negras noches sin luna,                 black moonless nights,
orilla al mar salado,                        on the edge of the salty sea,
y un chispear de estrellas              and the sparkling of stars
del cielo negro y bajo.                    of the black and low sky.
Tus ojos me recuerdan                   Your eyes remind me
las noches de verano.                    of the Summer nights.
Y tu morena cara,                           ...
los trigos requemados,
de un suspirar de fuego
de los maduros campos.
Tus ojos me recuerdan
las noches de verano

Todo pasa y todo queda              It all goes by and it all remains
Pero lo nuestro es pasar             but what we do is to go by
Pasar haciendo caminos             to go by tracing pathways
Caminos sobre el mar                 pathways over the sea

Nunca perseguí la gloria             I never sought glory
Ni dejar en la memoria                or to leave my song
De los hombres mi canción;        in man´s memory;
Yo amo los mundos sutiles         I love subtle worlds
Ingrávidos y gentiles                   weightless and gentle
Como pompas de jabón              like soap bubbles.

Me gusta verlos pintarse             I like to see them go the colour of
De sol y grana, volar                    the sun and pomegranates, fly
Bajo el cielo azul, temblar           under the blue sky, tremble
Súbitamente y quebrarse...         suddenly and breake...
Nunca perseguí la gloria             I never sought glory

Caminante son tus huellas          Wanderer, your footprints
El camino y nada más;                are the only path, nothing more;
Caminante, no hay camino          Wanderer, there is no path
Se hace camino al andar             we make it as we walk along

Al andar se hace camino             As we walk we lay the path
Y al volver la vista atrás              and when we look back
Se ve la senda que nunca           we can see the track
Se ha de volver a pisar                that one must never tread on again

Caminante no hay camino           Wanderer, there is no path
Sino estelas en la mar                 but a trail in the sea

Hace algún tiempo en ese lugar  Some time ago in this place
Donde hoy los bosques se visten where the forests dress up
de espinos                                        as hawthorns today
Se oyó la voz de un poeta              the voice of a poet was heard,
gritar                                                 crying out
"Caminante no hay camino          "Wanderer, there is no path
Se hace camino al andar..."         we make it as we walk along…"

Golpe a golpe, verso a verso       Blow after blow, verse by verse

Murió el poeta lejos del hogar      Far from his home the poet died
Le cubre el polvo de un país        covered by the dust of a neighbouring
Vecino                                              country
Al alejarse le vieron llorar             as he got further away they saw him cry
"Caminante no hay camino          "Wanderer, there is no path
Se hace camino al andar..."          we make it as we walk along…"

Golpe a golpe, verso a verso       Blow after blow, verse by verse

Cuando el jilguero no puede         When the goldfinch cannot sing
cantar
Cuando el poeta es un peregrino  when the poet is a pilgrim
Cuando de nada nos sirve rezar   when praying is no use to us

"Caminante no hay camino           "Wanderer, there is no path
Se hace camino al andar..."          we make it as we walk along..."

Popular song, written by the famous and loved Chilean singer Violeta Parra. There are many versions of this song. One of the better known is the one by Argentine singer, Mercedes Sosa. Joan Baez also sings it.

In Latin American Spanish varieties, there is no distinction between the formal and the informal plural of ´tú´ (you). The form is ´ustedes´. In Spain, however, there is a distinction between ´ustedes´ and ´vosotros/as´.

Aquí puedes escuchar una versión acústica
Here you can listen to an acoustic version

Y aquí, Mercedes Sosa cantando con Joan Baez:
And here, Mercedes Sosa singing with Joan Baez:

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me two stars, which when I open them,
Perfectly distinguish black from white
And in the tall sky its starry backdrop,
And within the multitudes the man that I love.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the sound of the abc
with it, the words that I think and declare,
“Mother,” “Friend,” “Brother”
and the light shining down on
The road of the soul of the one I'm loving.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me the steps of my tired feet.
With them I walked cities and puddles
Beaches and deserts, mountains and plains.
And the house of yours, your street and your courtyard.

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me this heart that shakes its frame,
When I see the fruit of the human brain,
When I see good so far from evil,
When I look into the depth of your light eyes…

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.
It gave me laughter and it gave me tears.
With them I distinguish happiness from pain
The two elements that make up my song,
And your song of yours, which is the same song.
And everyone’s song, which is my own song.

jugando llamarán;
pero aquéllas que el vuelo refrenaban
tu hermosura y mi dicha al contemplar,
aquéllas que aprendieron nuestros nombres...
ésas... ¡no volverán!
sus flores se abrirán;
pero aquéllas, cuajadas de rocío,
cuyas gotas mirábamos temblar
y caer, como lágrimas del día...
ésas... ¡no volverán!
jugando llamarán;
pero aquéllas que el vuelo refrenaban
tu hermosura y mi dicha al contemplar,
aquéllas que aprendieron nuestros nombres...
ésas... ¡no volverán!
The dark swallows will return
to your balcony to hang their nests
and, once again, with a wing to its glass
playing, they'll call;
but those that held back their flight
when contemplating your beauty and my bliss,
those that learned our names...
those... will not return!
The dense honeysuckle will return
to your garden to climb its walls,
and, once again, in the evening, even more beautiful,
its flowers will bloom;
but those, studded with dew,
whose drops we watched tremble
and fall, like the tears of the day...
those... will not return

The dark swallows will return
to your balcony to hang their nests
and, once again, with a wing to its glass
playing, they'll call;
but those that held back their flight
when contemplating your beauty and my bliss,
those that learned our names...
those... will not return!

Debajo un botón, ton, ton                  under a button
del Sr Martín, tin, tin                         of Mr Martín
había un ratón, ton, ton                      there was a mouse
¡ay, qué chiquitín, tin, tin!                  ay! how tiny!

¡ay, qué chiquitín, tin, tin                   ay, ¡how tiny
era aquel ratón                                   was that mouse
que encontró Martín, tin, tin              that Martin found
debajo un botón, ton, ton                   under a button

Es tan juguetón, ton, ton                   he´s so playful
el Señor Martín, tin, tin                    Mr Martin,
que metió el ratón, ton, ton               that he put the mouse
en un calcetín, tin, tin                       in a sock

En un calcetín, tin, tin                       in a sock
vive aquel ratón, ton, ton                  lives that mouse
lo metió Martín, tin, tin                     Martin put it there
porque es juguetón, ton, ton             because he is playful

And a slower version (with slightly different lyrics at the end):

Susanita tiene un ratón

Susanita tiene un ratón

Canción infantil de uno de ´Los payasos de la tele´ (TV clowns). This was a very popular group of clowns that had a show on TV in the 80´s. A lot of the children songs that we love in Spain today were written by them.

Miliki was a clown, accordionist and singer and his programme, ´Los payasos de la tele´ was a huge success in Spain.

Susanita tiene un ratón                          Little Susan has a mouse
un ratón chiquitín                                  a teensy mouse
que come chocolate y turrón                 that eats chocolate and turron
y bolitas de anís                                    and little balls of aniseed

duerme cerca del radiador                    he sleeps near the radiator
con la almohada en los pies                  with the pillow under his feet
y sueña que es un gran campeón          and he dreams that he is a great champion
jugando al ajedrez                                 playing chess

Le gusta el futbol                                  He likes football
el cine y el teatro                                   cinema and theatre
baila tango y rock and roll                    he dances tango and rock and roll

Y si llegamos                                         and if we arrive
y nota que observamos                          and he notices we are watching
siempre nos canta esta canción              he always sings this song to us
